Full Description
<1> Environment Agency, 2003-2020, Environment Agency LiDAR Surveys, Composite DTM 1m (22/02/2022) (Digital Archive). SCH7819.
A semi regular pattern of linear earthworks visible on LIDAR survey data. The earthworks are predominantly located on a natural slope adjacent to the western side of Rostherne Mere. The earthworks comprise a smaller number of longer negative linear earthworks orientated down the slope, with more frequent shorter negative earthworks running along the slope. One of the longer earthworks displays a marked aratral (reversed S shape) curve. Associated are two large pits which appear to truncate the linear earthworks..
<2> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, (22/02/2022) (Oral Communication). SCH2330.
The linear earthworks are the remians of field boundary ditches which predate the establishment of the woodland here. The aratral boundary, a common feature where boundaies have been establiched on former medieval field systems, suggests a late medieval to seventeenth century date for these features. The extractive pits appear to post date the field system.
