Full Description

<1> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 06/01/2022 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

A semi regular pattern of five sub circular plantations located to the immediate west and south west of Nab Farm. Two further plantations are located c.170 metres to the north and c.160 metres to the east. The plantations afford an almost parkland character to the area and are first depicted on the 1849 tithe map for Bollington (see 2) where they are described as plantations. This map also depicts a further plantation, associated with a building, adjacent to the northerly example. Environment Agency LIDAR (see 3) shows that each of the plantations are associated with a mound, and in a few instances, a depression. Three of these features correspond with features labelled coal pits on Burdett’s 1777 map of Cheshire (see 4). The seemingly regular placement of these features, and their reuse as plantations, is very similar to the remains of coal mining between Berristall Hall and Pott Hall c.1 kilometre to the east (see CHER 14012), suggesting a similar origin. Further early post medieval coal ming remains are located c.250 metres to the west (CHER 15454) and north-west (CHER 7830).
