Sink Moss was investigated by the North West Wetlands project, an archaeological and paleoecological study of the varied wetlands of Cheshire, undertaken between 1993-95. A small area of peat land, Sink Moss is one of a number of mosses located to the south of the River Mersey, also including Stretton Moss, Appleton Moss and Whitley Reed. It is unusual in that it is now almost wholly defined and surrounded by a modern road. However, an examination of Burdett's map of 1777 suggests the site has shrunk considerably since the late eighteenth century, when it is shown extending as far north as the present M56. However, this probably reflects the inclusion of the area known as Sworton Heath which was almost certainly unenclosed at that time, there being several 'Inclosures on Sworton Heath' listed in the High Legh Tithe Award of 1847.
