Full Description
<1> L-P Archaeology, 2021, Archaeological Evaluation Report: 87-89 Foregate Street, Chester, R4517 (Client Report). SCH9055.
Remains of Roman date were recorded during an archaeological evaluation (Trench 5) in 2020 at 87-89 Foregate Street. The top of Roman archaeology was encountered at 0.7m below ground level (20.788m OD) and consisted of a succession of clay floor surfaces interspersed with silty occupation layers which produced pottery and ceramic building material of Roman date. The deposits recorded were similar to the alternating layers of clay and silt observed in Trench 6 and 7 (see CHER 8713 and CHER 8714) which have also been interpreted as a series of internal clay floors and occupation soils.
A sub-circular feature [feature 522], 0.7m in diameter and 0.33m deep, was also recorded. The base of [522] had a square post-like depression measuring 0.1 by 0.12m, which suggested that the feature was a post-hole, indicating the presence of timber structures. The fill of the posthole was rich in Roman pottery including the base to a Samian ware cup with a makers stamp.
