An archaeological evaluation at 87-89 Foregate Street, Chester, in 2020, recorded an upstanding brick wall (509) in the southern end of Trench 5. The wall was aligned east-west with a north-south return wall visible in the eastern section of the trench. Wall (509) is thought to form the northern end of a brick cellar, it was 0.36m wide and at least 1.24m high. The remains of the cellar sits within the footprint of a building which broadly corresponds to Number 87 Foregate Street as depicted on the OS First Edition map of 1875. Another east-west brick wall footing (536) identified at the northern end of trench 5 could represent the rear wall of the same building. This building remained unchanged until at least 1935.
