Monument record 15304 - Ridge and Furrow Earthworks West of Mudhurst Lane

Please read our .

Summary

An area containing earthworks created by agricultural activity. The area includes parallel linear earthworks, in the form of distinct ridges and troughs known as ridge and furrow. Ridge and furrow earthworks form as a result of medieval and post medieval cultivation practices. In this instance, the regularity of the pattern and the relatively narrow ridges and furrows, indicates a post medieval date.

Ridge and furrow of medieval and or post medieval origin within the parish of Disley is visible as both extant and levelled earthworks and cropmarks on vertical aerial photography (see 2). The ridge and furrow is visible as both broader and narrow forms, suggesting potential post medieval reuse of earlier ploughing.

The ridge and furrow earthworks are visible on these aerial images, though they are somewhat obscured by the rough grasses and other vegetation. The pattern is regular with an approximate distance of 3.5m between the ridges. There are no obvious headlands. This would suggest a latter post medieval origin for these earthworks. Within this area are occasional relict field boundaries, trackways and other linear earthworks whose function is not readily apparent.
