Summary

A small goods station which operated between 1852 and 1964. Although no longer in use for its original purpose, the good shed, office and associated house are still present and utilised for new purposes. Construction for the North Staffordshire Railway’s Sandbach branch began in 1846 and it was opened in 1852. However, passenger services didn’t begin until the 1893 and ended in 1930. Freight traffic continued over the line until 1964 and the line was finally closed and lifted in 1971.

The construction of the North Staffordshire Railway’s Sandbach branch was facilitated by the North Staffordshire Railway (Harecastle and Sandbach) Act 1846. Construction was authorised to begin on the 26th June 1846, with goods services beginning on the 21st January 1852. However, passenger services didn’t begin until the 3rd July 1893. Freight traffic continued over the line until 1964 and the line was finally closed and lifted in 1971.

This map depicts a station at this location. It comprises a passing loop from the single line branch line and a further loop serving a probable goods shed. On this loop, to the north-west of the shed, is a small turntable. To the south-east is a weighing machine, a further building and a crane. A further weighing machine is located to the east.

A further building has been constructed to the west of the northern end of the goods shed. Labelled Goods Station.

The buildings depicted on the two nineteenth century Ordnance Survey maps (see 3 & 4) are still extant. The goods shed is in use as a garage. The southern building is still in use as a house.
