Monument record 1332/2/10 - Linear Earthwork West of Gawsworth Hall Pond Flight

A wide linear earthwork in the form of a ditch is visible on this aerial photograph. The earthwork is approximately ten metres wide and is approximately two hundred and thirty metres long.

The earthwork runs from a field boundary a little to the west of the now dry, fifth pond and last pool of the flight of pools which form part of the sixteenth century formal gardens at Gawsworth (the pools may have an earlier origin as medieval fishponds, see 3), and the location of this earthwork may suggest it was once the outflow for this flight of ponds.
