Summary

Several blocks of parallel linear earthworks in the form of distinct ridges and troughs known as ridge and furrow and formed by medieval cultivation practices. Full Description

<1> Environment Agency, 2003-2020, Environment Agency LiDAR Surveys, 1m DSM Composite (28/06/2021) (Digital Archive). SCH7819.

A number of individual blocks of ridge and furrow earthworks are visible on this survey. The ridge and furrow is generally curving and headlands are generally absent. The distance from ridge to ridge is between four metres and six meters. Further banks and ditches correspond to field boundaries depicted on the Ordnance Survey map (see 2). These later field boundaries generally respect the boundaries of the blocks of ridge and furrow. Earthworks associated with extant and former marl pits are common and truncate the ridge and furrow.

The earthworks are significantly better preserved in the west, than in the east, where they become more fragmentary and poorly preserved.

The earthworks are very clearly defined on these aerial photographs.
