Summary

The site of a long wide bank depicted on an Ordnance Survey map dating from 1875 and labelled Long Ridge. At its south-eastern end, the earthwork adjoins a tramway embankment (see CHER 15272). Destroyed by sand quarrying.

Full Description

<1> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ5669, 1875 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

This map depicts a long wide bank. The earthwork is aligned north-west to south-east and is slightly sinuous. It is c.550m long and up to c.60m wide. In general, the bank is wider to the west of the crest, than to the east. A path runs along the top and continues beyond the earthwork to the north-west. At its south-eastern end, the earthwork adjoins the tramway embankment (see CHER 15272). The earthwork is labelled Long Ridge.

The Long Ridge was an esker which the Marley Tile Company quarried for their roof tiles. It gave its name to the Longridge Allotment, which is marked on the Grantham map (see 5).
