Full Description
<1> Archaeological Research Services Ltd, 2020, An Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment of North Rode Timber, Kinsey Street, Congleton, Cheshire, R4495 (Client Report). SCH9000.
A desk-based assessment undertaken in 2020 in advance of proposed development identified the possible site of an eighteenth century bakehouse, centred at approximately 386099, 362941, to the south of Park Street, Congleton. The 1772 Plan of the Estate of Peter Shakerly Esq (Lord of Congleton) shows a plot of land described as “Bakehouse Croft”, suggesting that the land belonged to a bakehouse or that a bakehouse may have been located close by. However, the construction of Park Tannery in the nineteenth century on this site, makes it unlikely that any remains relating to the possible bakehouse structure could survive. (see also source 2)
