Full Description
<1> Chapel Archaeology CIC, 2020, Archaeological Watching Brief Groundworks undertaken at 10–11 Abbey Square and 3–6 Abbey Green, Chester, R4495 (Client Report). SCH8986.
The remains of a 16th-17th century wall was recorded to the rear of No. 11 Abbey Square during an archaeological watching brief in 2019–2020. The wall, constructed of thin bricks, was observed and recorded within a previous north-south aligned drainage course. This was retained within the new water utility, incorporated without damage, as part of the shuttering process. The wall may relate to a bake house depicted on the Randle Holmes map (pre-1626). The level of the top course of the wall was 29.18m AOD. Finds were scarce and none of pre 19th–20th century date. (1)
