Full Description

<1> Bryant, A., 1831, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2114.

This map depicts a tramway, labelled “Little Railway” running from a north-south tramway (which runs along the county boundary in Staffordshire) in the vicinity of Moss Farm, to Scholar Green, where a coal wharf is also depicted. The tramway runs west to the north of Moss Farm, before turning north to run to the east of the Trent and Mersey canal for some distance, before turning to the west and crossing the canal to meet the Congleton Road at Scholar Green

<2> Greenwood, C. & Greenwood J., 1819, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2115.

The tramway is depicted on this map, but isn't labelled.

<3> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 110/2, 1839 & EDT 309/2, 1838 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

The tramway (labelled “Rail Road”) is depicted on the Church Lawton tithe map of 1839. The tramway runs west from the County boundary across fields before joining and running along the road (Moss Lane) to the immediate north of Moss House. Following the road, the tramway skirts the southern edge of a Moss House Plantation before turning north to run along fields for c.700 yards before turning west again and meeting the township boundary. The tramway isn’t depicted on the neighbouring tithe map for Odd Rode (1838), though the bridge across the canal is, as is a short lane where the tramway would be expected to reach the Congleton Road. The plot opposite this feature is called “Coal Wharf”.

<4> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ8455 (1873-1888), SJ8355 (1873-1888) & SJ8356 (1875-1888) (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

The tramway is no longer extant. A short embankment survives in the field adjacent to the County boundary, the field west of Moss Wood and in the fields east of Little Moss. Much of the course survives as a footpath and it is notable that a bridge has been built to carry the embanked North Staffordshire Railway line over the course of the tramway at Little Moss.

<5> Ordnance Survey, 1861-1886, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Staffordshire, SJ8455 (1877) & SJ8555 (1877) (Maps and Plans). SCH8996.

This map indicates that the tramway would have joined another tramway to the immediate east of an old colliery. This tramway is still extant and runs from collieries at Trubshaw, Staffordshire, via Moss Coal Pit, to the Union Foundary at Kidsgrove.

<6> Environment Agency, 2003-2020, Environment Agency LiDAR Surveys, Composite 1m DSM (19/04/2021) (Digital Archive). SCH7819.

A short embankment and cutting survives in the field adjacent east of Moss House Farm and as a slight embankment in the fields east of Little Moss.
