An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2020 during the excavation of several cruciform trenches, as part of the off-site drainage, for the re-development of Chester Northgate. The fourth cruciform trench was situated on the eastern side of Nicholas Street, opposite the eastern end of Grey Friars, and was excavated to a maximum depth of 1.1m. A 0.45m-wide wall, aligned east/west, consisted of a double skin of red sandstone blocks with yellow sandy lime mortar, in the northern arm of this trench. It probably represents the remains of an east/west-aligned wall of a terraced building, as depicted on the 1874 Ordnance Survey 1:500 town plan of Chester.
