Summary

The parish church of All Saints is a grade II listed building and was built between 1843 and 1890. The church was built on the site of an earlier chapel, which some sources suggest was built in 1663. Despite repairs in 1782, the chapel became too small for the congregation at Thelwall.

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in 2000 during groundworks associated with improvements to the facilities at All Saints' Church, Thelwall. Although the ground disturbance was limited to one linear trench, graves of probable eighteenth and nineteenth century date were identified, but no features or finds suggesting the presence of an earlier chapel on site were noted.

Here is a Chappel of ease called Thelwall chappel, situate near to the mannor-house of Thelwall, and within the parochiall chappelry of Daresbury, but both within the limits of the mother-church of Runcorne. This, I conceive, was built by Thomas Brookes, esquire, and was lately repaired by Mr. Pickering aforesaid, 1663 (see 4).

At a short distance from the mansion is the Chapel mentioned by Sir Peter Leycester, which, after falling into a state of considerable decay, was repaired in or about 1782, and has since been used for Divine service [down to 1843] and augmented by queen Anne's bounty. [In the latter year it was removed and the present church, dedicated to All Saints, was built on its site. This church consists of a nave, chancel, and North Transept; and Thelwall has been constituted into a separate parish. Prior to 1782 there were no regularly appointed incumbents of the chapel.

Includes a description on a number of monuments located within the church.
