House, now a boarding school, early nineteenth century altered mid nineteenth century and extended to near mid twentieth century. Brick with stucco dressings; grey slate roof. Symmetrical front of three storeys and three windows (fifth to third storey) with pediment gable, stucco Roman Doric doorcase containing part-glazed six-panel door with two-storey rendered canted mid-to-late nineteenth century bay window to each side containing four-pane recessed sashes under keystone lintels. Above the door is a four-pane sash in shouldered moulded stucco case with entablature; a similar but shorter window to third storey with two flush-frame four-pane sashes under keystone lintels to each side. Interior: Right front room has moulded plaster ceiling of geometrical panels; left front room has curved niche in rear wall; doors from hall have early nineteenth century moulded cases. Late nineteenth century open-well stair. Doors on upper storeys have six fielded panels.

This map depicts the hall with a further non-domestic building to the east. The award describes this plot as Mansion House called "Green Field", Outbuildings, Hot House, Greenhouse, Yards, Orchard, Gardens, Pleasure grounds, Ponds and Plantation.

This map depicts the house which is named Greenfield House. To the rear of the house are attached buildings which may be the service range. To the immediate east are buildings which may be stables. To the immediate north-west is possible walled garden with associated glasshouses.

The school was set up in 1940 to provide a hostel, based at Chaigley Manor, near Clitheroe, for evacuees fleeing the Liverpool blitz. When Chaigeley Manor, was required by its owner at the close of the war in 1946, the school moved to Thelwall (formerly Greenfield’s House).
