A group of five sections of brick foundations (Area A, Features F1-F5) were recorded during a watching brief, in 2018-2019, monitoring groundworks associated with the extension and refurbishment of the Old Bishop's Palace. These appear to be associated with a previous phase of extension to the Palace building erected during the 1860s. Excavations for the underpinning work to the 1980s extension to the Palace demonstrated that, for the most part, deposits of sandy soil and sandstone rubble extended to a depth of c. 1.0m beneath the 1980s extension, the brick footings encountered – F1 to F5 – had seemingly penetrated this material.
