Summary

The site of a farmstead depicted on historic maps dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. There are documentary references to this farmstead, known as the Nesset, dating back to the early fourteenth century. No above ground archaeological remains survive, but associated earthworks and below ground archaeological remains are expected in this area.

This map depicts two buildings in a rectangular enclosure labelled Nesset.

the first documentary reference to le Nesset dates from 1384 and there is a further reference to Nesset hill in 1611. It may mean 'fold on a hill'.

This map depicts a significant complex of adjoining buildings in two main groups around a possible yard area. Further oubuildings form part of this group with small fields or folds adjoining. The farmstead is named Nesset. A garden is depicted on the north-eastern side.

A clearer depiction of the earlier Ordnance Survey map. The main house would appear to be located on the eastern side.

Although the outline of the farmstead can be traced in the photograph, none of the buildings are still extant.

A regular sub-rectangular depression visible on this survey corresponds with a quarry depicted on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map (see 4).
