Full Description

<1> Bryant, A., 1831, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2114.

This map depicts the farmstead, comprising two buildings within a rectangular enclosure, and named Starve House.

<2> Greenwood, C. & Greenwood J., 1819, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2115.

The farmstead is depicted, but is not named.

<3> Dodgson J McN, 1970-2, 1981, The Place-Names of Cheshire, Vol.I p.129 (Book). SCH3228.

This source confuses Starve House with Winchalltop to the north. The earliest occurance of the place-name Starve House is Bryant's map of 1831 (see 1).

<4> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 255/2 1849 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

This map depicts a single rectangular building orientated north to south on it's longest axis. It is described as part of a plot of "meadow, house, outhouses and c.".

<5> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ9772, 1873 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

It is uncertain whether this map depicts two buildings connected at their gable ends with a further smaller building on the northern side, similar to the building depicted on the tithe map (see 4), or a single square building with two small enclosures to the immediate north, as depicted on later maps (see 6). Associated is small enclosure or fold on the southern side. The farmstead is labelled Stavehouse.

<6> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ9772, 1897 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.

This map depicts a single square building with small enclosures or folds the north and south. The farmstead is labelled Stavehouse.

<7> Ordnance Survey, 1909-1912, Ordnance Survey Second Revision County Series (Epoch 3) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ9772, 1909 (Maps and Plans). SCH4361.

The farmstead is no longer extant.

<8> Bluesky International Ltd, 2010, 2010 Bluesky Survey, UXP_101017_7170 & UXP_101017_7220, 17/10/2010 (Aerial Photograph). SCH5444.

The site of the farmstead survives as a distinct earthwork.
