Full Description
<1> Archaeological Research Services Ltd, 2007-9, North West Rapid Coastal Zone National Mapping Programme Assessment Survey (Digital Archive). SCH8040.
Several ditched boundaries, showing as cropmarks, were recorded in the field to the south of Grange Green Manor by the North West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment, air photographic mapping, 2007-2009. The features were seen on RAF photography dating to the 1940's. The date of the features was recorded as uncertain.
<2> Google, 2005-2023, Google Maps, Google Maps 2019 (Web Site). SCH8660.
This site is clearly visible as ditched cropmarks on Google Maps imagery dating to 2019. The site is showing in great detail and comprises two large, conjoined, sub-square enclosures, circa 70m square, with associated trackways and boundaries. Further smaller rectilinear enclosures are visible, along with potential pits. Some boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map align with the cropmark ditches, but the cropmark ditches form part of a more extensive system comprising the enclosures, trackways and boundaries suggesting that these pre-date the tithe mapping. The site lies just to the west of the Roman Road from Chester to Wilderspool. The nature of the cropmarks may suggest a Roman date although this is hypothetical.
Further ditched boundaries forming a field system are visible on the same Google imagery in fields to the west and north of the enclosure complex; these are recorded separately, but, potentially, could be associated.
