Summary

A house of built circa 1847 with further early twentieth century additions. Built in a Tudor Gothick style of rendered brick with a Welsh slate roof and four plastered chimneys. The best preserved of the early speculator's houses on the Edge. It is possibly an older house turned into a villa.

House: 1847 with early twentieth century additions. Rendered brick on plinth with Welsh slate roof and four plastered chimneys. Tudor Gothick style. Originally L-shaped now square. Two-storey, three-bay west front. Left end bay has recessed two-light windows with glazing bars and intersecting tracery in the heads, the one above under a hood mould in a barge boarded gable. Similar windows in right end bay which steps forward. Central chamfered doorcase has four-centred arched head above half-glazed door. Above is two-light window opening onto balcony above door, with plain parapet. Tracery in windows on the sides. Interior: Staircase has square balusters, mahogany handrail and shaped open string. Two original fireplaces with cast-iron grates, one with engaged columns four-panelled doors. The best preserved of the early speculator's houses on the Edge.

May be pre-railway because it does not conform to the standard de Trafford conditions - too close to the boundary. An older house turned into a villa, it faces down the hill. Georgian proportions with gothic glazing bars.

The tithe map for Chorley of 1841 shows a building within a plot here named "Homestead and garden". Owner is Thomas Joseph trafford and the occupier is Joshua Lawton.
