Summary

A medieval fish pond associated with the adjacent manor. From the sixteenth century, this pond may have been incorporated as a water feature as part of the formal gardens attached to the possible manor house.

Full Description

<1> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ8461, 1875 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

This map depicts a sub rectangular pond c.95m x 30m to the immediate east and north-east of Glebe Farm (also known as the Old Rectory). It is labelled 'Fish Pond' and tapers at its northern end. The southern end is square and is directly adjacent to the earthworks which form part of the possible formal gardens (CHER 1162/1).

This pond may have been a water feature associated with the formal gardens, as at Gawsworth, but may also have its origins as a fish pond associated with the manorial site.
