Full Description
<1> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 269/2, 1848 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.
The 1848 tithe map for Mere township depicts six buildings on the site of what is now Parkside Garage. Three evenly spaced square buildings are located at the southern boundary of the plot. To their immediate north is one rectangular building, aligned almost east-west along its longest axis, with two further square buildings to its north. The plot is named ‘Further Croft and Croft’.
<2> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ7381, 1876-1877 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.
This map depicts a farmstead comprising two buildings. These buildings appear to correspond with the western part of the rectangular building and the western square building depicted on the tithe map (see 1). The farmstead is labelled Parkside Farm.
<3> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ7381, 1898 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.
This map depicts the same buildings as the earlier 1876-1877 Ordnance Survey map. The rectangular building has been extended at its eastern end and to the north, forming an L shape. The northern extension appears to be an open sided barn.
<4> Huntings Surveys Ltd, 1971-1973, 1971-1973 County Survey, Run 33 no.2489, 16/05/1973 (Aerial Photograph). SCH4881.
The buildings depicted on the historic Ordnance Survey maps are still extant with the exception of the open sided barn. The L shaped buiding has been substantially extended and further buildings built to it's east. The number of vehicles visible on the photograph suggest that the farmstead has become a garage.
<5> Bryant, A., 1831, Map of the County Palatine of Chester (Maps and Plans). SCH2114.
This map depicts the farmstead.
<6> Dodgson J McN, 1970-2, 1981, The Place-Names of Cheshire, Vol.II, p.53 (Book). SCH3228.
