Summary

Site of nineteenth century stables associated with Eaton Hall, formerly Grade II listed (as with the icehouse, see 2272/2). Due to sand quarrying, Eaton Hall was demolished in 1981, both the stables and icehouse were demolished in the 1990s.

Stable block, formerly to Eaton Hall (which is now demolished). Dated 1831 on datestones. By Lewis Wyatt. Red Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings and slate roof. Two-storey ranges around square courtyard. Entrance front: Five bays with ashlar plinth, quoins and window surrounds. Central projecting bay has two-storey semi-circular-headed archway. Ashlar quoins to corners of bay and arch surround and deep stone band at level of springing extending across this bay only. Dropped slightly projecting keystone to arch. String course at level of start of parapet extending slightly upwards at centre to level of top of keystone and away at sides around entire block. Similarly moulded coping to parapet. Central shallow-pitched pedimental gable over arch enclosing rectangular datestone. Squat stone obelisks on shaped plinths to summit and sides of gable. Brick barrel-vault to arch. Lead rainwater pipes to re-entrant angles of central bay with heraldic crests to rainwater heads showing unicorn head in relief. To either side are ground floor windows of 6 x 6 panes and 6 x 4 panes to the first floor. Right and left reveals have random fenestration. Rear: Four ground floor windows of 6 x 6 panes and four first floor windows of 6 x 4 panes. That at right of 3 x 2 sash panes. The ground floor window to right of centre has had a C20 door imposed. Courtyard: Facade opposite archway has range of 5 double carriage doors with stone surrounded doors. Four first floor windows to side. Right hand facade has further range of three carriage doors all with original double doors. Door in stone surround to left of this and C20 double doors at right. Three first floor windows. Left hand facade: Three stone surrounded doors at centre left and right with stone surrounded windows of 5 x 6 panes between. The right hand window is now blocked and a single-light C20 window imposed. Three first floor windows. Rear of entrance facade: Central archway with datestone over in similar surround to that at front. Ashlar surrounded windows to ground and first floors at either side.

The stable block was demolished with the icehouse (see 2272/2) in the 1990s.
