Archaeological trial trenching was undertaken at 15-17 & 19 Newgate Street in 2018 prior to redevelopment. Trench 3 was located within a 1950s extension at the rear of the properties. It measured 1.5m x 1.4m and was cut though a concrete floor over a brick and concrete rubble underlay and reached a maximum depth reached within Test pit 3 is estimated of 20.4m aOD. A series of levelling deposits were recorded (303), (304) and (305) , these were dated to the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries by the occasional fragments of pottery and building material. The small assemblage of medieval pottery consists mostly of fragments of glazed jugs, including two sherds from a Coal Measures Ware vessel with vertical iron-rich slip-stripes. This type of decoration is rare on this type of pottery from Welsh sites, but is known on similar wares from Staffordshire. Overall, the medieval material is in fairly good condition, and appears reliably stratified. A couple of residual late Roman sherds were also retrieved during the excavation.
