Archaeological trial trenching was undertaken at 15-17 & 19 Newgate Street in 2018 prior to redevelopment. Trench 1 was located within an elevated sandstone slab court yard, at the rear of 15-17 Newgate Street, and immediately to the west of the Roman City Walls. The trench originally measured 1.5m by 1.64m with a depth of 1.2m but was extended to allow for a deep sondage which reached a maximum depth of 1.71m. A succession of dumped deposits were recorded containing pottery, glass and clay tobacco pipe. The majority of the finds came from the earliest deposit (107), encountered at a depth of 21.7m aOD and dating to the late eighteenth century. The finds recovered are mostly domestic pottery, potentially representing the contents of a single household; the range of pottery types suggest a disposal date of sometime around 1800. The most common wares present include Creamware and Pearlware, but also include utilitarian stonewares and earthenwares, with the latter mostly black-glazed Buckleytype earthenwares, although two fragments of Buckley Slipware vessels of 18th century date were also present. A single residual Roman tile fragment was also recovered from the bottom of the deposit. The succession of waste deposits reflected how the land was used from the late eighteenth century onwards.
