Full Description

Weir site probably established in early 1730s as part of the original construction of the Weaver Navigation, the purpose being to maintain a head of water on the river above Pickering's Locks on Pickering's Cut. Weir was rebuilt in 1758 and, after being washed away, again in 1761. Shown on Bryant's map of 1831, the 1839 Acton tithe map, 1841 Dutton tithe map and the 1873-7 OS map. Not shown in 1908, having been replaced by the new sluice upstream (Dutton Sluice). The 1873-7 OS map shows the river here as wider than at present, and appears to place the eastern end of the weir on what is now the riverbank on the west side of the Dutton site. The area is now heavily overgrown. No remains of the weir were noted during the site inspection.
