On 20/03/1943 An Airspeed Oxford took off from RAF Sealand returning to its base at Cranage, understood to be a navigational training exercise and crashed at Mottrams Farm, Ash Bank, Crewe having collided with a barrage balloon protecting the Rolls Royce works in Crewe. All 4 crew were killed and their bodies recovered. Map showing probable location of the crash site used to locate.
