Building record 1230/3/3 - Folly Tower in Table Mere

The folly is located on an island set on the middle of a man-made lake to the south of the new Tabley Hall. The island is surrounded with a fringe of stones finished with a curb stone and further shingle beyond. There are also two canon of unknown date lying on the island. The tower is of brick construction in a circular form, measuring approximately 5 metres in diameter and c.11.5 metres tall. The interior contains two floors access from the ground floor by a circular staircase which is now in a ruinous condition.

Tower. c1780. Red brick. Circular, three storeys. Ground floor: moulded doorcase with arched entrance. First floor: four windows, each with two arched lights. Second floor: eight oculi. Machicolations above supporting battlemented turret.

On a small island in the western half of the Mere is the round, brick, battlemented. three-storey Folly Tower of c.1780 which dominates Turner's paintings of 1808.
