‘…The Mechanical Workshop was built c1949 as part of a suite of similar buildings arranged around the part of the site known as the green. The buildings around the green were the hub of both research and teaching onsite. The construction of these new buildings marked a serious commitment by the University to the development of a permanent radio observatory at the Jodrell Bank site, and they are the earliest surviving purpose-built structures for that use. The Mechanical Workshop has been in use for its original purpose since 1949, originally making telescopes only for Jodrell Bank, but from the 1970s, when it was expanded to the east, also making telescopes for other sites including those abroad. Some internal spaces have been created with brick partitions and are probably not original. A freestanding office has also been installed in the south end. The eastern extension of the southern half of the building involved the retention of the concrete frame but removal of the walling between. The concrete door canopies shown in 1950s photographs have also been removed…’
