<1> Earthworks Archaeological Services, 2017, Proposed Alterations at The Old Palace, The Groves, Chester: An Archaeological Evaluation, R4126 (Client Report). SCH8401.
In May 2017 an archaeological evaluation recorded intact deposits of Roman date (trench 1) at The Old Palace, Chester. A single, roughly-squared block of red sandstone, set in a construction trench, could have formed part of a larger structure. Also, recorded was a stratigraphically later post hole containing small fragments of red sandstone, possibly used for packing. The fill of the post hole contained a sherd of Roman pottery. The earliest deposit identified, a grey-green silt circa 0.10m thick, contained two sherds of Roman pottery dating to the late first and early second century AD.
