Archaeological monitoring and excavation works were carried out in 2013-2014 at Grosvenor Park, Chester, as part of redevelopment of the toilets and Pavilion. A 0.4 thick agricultural layer or plough soil of Roman date, approximately 1m below ground level, was found to cover the entire area. This layer sealed a number of features, also of Roman date, including a circular pit and a series of linear gulleys, probably drainage ditches, cut into the natural clay. Similar ditches/gullies, one containing Roman ceramics, were identified in foundation pits for the Pavilion, also during the excavation of an investigative sondage at the south-west corner of the Pavilion and new service trenches. In some cases these features were very shallow and appear to have been truncated by the later Roman agricultural activity.
