Archaeological monitoring and excavation works were carried out between February 2013 and July 2014 at the site of Grosvenor park, Chester. These works were undertaken as part of a phase of refurbishment, renovation and extension works, which included the refurbishment of the park pathways, demolition of standing structures, the erection of a new pavilion and extension and refurbishment of the Lodge building. To the south of the Lodge building, a new service trench and man hole revealed a Roman ditch cut into the natural clay running east-west. This ditch had a V-shaped profile. A second similar ditch was exposed in the service trench to the east of the Lodge. The size and profile of the ditches may suggest a military function and there is a theory that they may be associated with the early fortlett which potentially occupied this area.
