An assessment was undertaken in January 2018 to outline the historic and architectural interest of Brookside Cottage, Radway Green Road, Barthomley, prior to proposed extension. Brookside Cottage is a Grade II listed, nineteenth century family dwelling, originally created from a shop with attached cottage, although research carried out for this study suggests that the building may also have housed a post office. Details of the architect could not be established, however, the eclectic and romantic architectural styling of the building suggests a late nineteenth century date. A significant change took place in the centre of the village in 1867 when the Punch Bowl Inn, also known as ‘The Steps’ and an associated shop were demolished. These buildings were directly opposite the site of Brookside Cottages and the loss of the shop may have necessitated a replacement. An Ordnance Survey map of 1873-49 shows the Punch Bowl buildings missing and a Post Office label adjacent to the site of Brookside Cottages. It is therefore not unreasonable to suggest that the buildings were erected circa 1870.
