Full Description

Austerson Farm is depicted on the Tithe Map (circa 1842) for Austerson Township (source 2). At this date, the complex comprises three buildings - the house itself, to the north of the access road, and two, long outbuildings/barns, to the south of the road. By 1882, the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (source 3) shows the complex to have expanded; an 'L-shaped' building has been added to the two outbuildings to the south, forming a courtyard arrangement; also further ancilliary buildings are visible immediately to the north and north-west of the farmhouse. The Ordnance Survey Second Edition map of 1896-98 (source 4), shows a further building added to the south of the complex, parallel with the southern-most outbuilding of the courtyard arrangement. The Ordnance Survey Third Edition map of 1909-12 (source 5) shows the complex more or less unchanged, although further ancilliary buildings have been added just to the west of the farmhouse. The farmhouse remains more or less the same today and the outbuildings to the south of the access road also appear to still exist amongst later farm buildings. However, the ancilliary buildings to the north-west of the farmhouse have been levelled. Air photographs show that they still existed in the 1940s (source 6), but had disappeared by the 1970s (source 7), with the area used as pasture. It is possible that below-ground remains of these ancilliary buildings still exist.
