Early post-medieval soil deposits found over a Roman metalled surface in area 2 at Gorsestacks at excavations in 2015/16.
Pottery recovered included sherds from Ewloe-type ware and Tudor Green ware suggesting that this material was accumulating from at least the 15th century. An environmental sample taken from the stratigraphically earliest of these deposits, context (2012), identified that although fairly organic, only a relatively restricted assemblage of waterlogged seeds/fruits had survived (comprising: docks, elder, nettle, and henbane). These species are typical of waste/rough ground, the latter two preferring soils manured by animals.
