Full Description
<1> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Woodhouse J, 27/03/2018 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.
Ridge and furrow earthworks were visible during an evening walk.
<2> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 17/04/2018 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.
The earthworks show best on aerial photographs taken on the 16th of May 1973 (see 3). Although the pattern of the ridge and furrow seems very regular and that the reverse S shape characteristic of medieval ridge and furrow is absent, it’s notable that the width from ridge to ridge is a characteristic c.4m. Therefore it is probably late medieval to early post medieval in date and was probably created with a horse drawn plough. It seems probable that the field boundaries and marl pits post-date the ridge and furrow.
