Summary

Roman finds were recovered at this location on two occasions, in 1904 and in 1938. In 1904, a Samian vessel marked CRE (probably OF CRESTI) was found at the Old Queen's Head Hotel at 97 Foregate St. The hotel was demolished in 1938 to make way for a new building under the same sign, and a substantial Roman deposit was recorded. The Roman layer was c0.8m thick, c2.2m below street level.

Full Description

This monument / findspot represents the Roman remains found at this location on two occasions, in 1904 and in 1938. In 1904, a Samian vessel marked CRE (probably OF CRESTI) was found at the Old Queen's Head Hotel at 97 Foregate St. (1). The hotel was demolished in 1938 to make way for a new building under the same sign. The west side of the inn forms the east boundary to Claremont Walk which leads into Foregate St.

The Roman layer was c0.8m thick, c2.2m below street level. No structural features were revealed, but finds consist of Samian ware and coarse ware, amphorae fragments, a dozen coins from Vespasian to Constantine I, and an implement of stag horn (2).
