Monument record 14150 - Post Medieval Building, Potentially a Greenhouse, East of Wistaston Green Lane

Please read our .

Summary

A building depicted on the tithe map, which recorded the plot as the 'Garden', was subject to a strip, map and record archaeological excavation in 2017. A building platform was identified along with finds ranging in date from the late seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries, with the majority of an eighteenth century date. The absence of any foundations indicate that the building was a relatively insubstantial structure potentially a greenhouse or other garden structure. A ditch to the east of the 'Garden' building probably represents the remains of a boundary, also a cobbled surface was recorded to the west of the building.

A heritage statement was undertaken in 2010 for land to the east of Wistaston Green Lane in advance of a residential development. It identified a building to the east of the road recorded on tithe mapping (1840) and labelled on the apportionment as 'Garden', indicating that the building was perhaps not for residential use at this time. The building also appears to be present on earlier mapping - Burdett's Map of 1777 and Greenwood's map of 1819, indicating that it was built prior to 1777. It is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition map of 1876, so had apparently been demolished by this date.

In July 2017, following on from the heritage assessment in 2010, a strip, map and record excavation of 20m squared, was undertaken on the site of the 'Garden' building. The remains of a building platform were uncovered associated with finds ranging in date from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries, with the majority of an eighteenth century date. The absence of any foundations indicate that the building was a relatively insubstantial structure, potentially a greenhouse or other garden structure. A ditch to the east of the building probably reprensents the remains of a boundary, also a cobbled surface was recorded to the west of the building, presumably providing access into it.
