A large, medieval pit was identified during an archaeological excavation undertaken in 2017 at St. Mary's Church in advance of demolition of the existing Church Hall and the erection of a new Community Centre. The pit was sub-circular in shape and had a diameter in excess of 3m, extending beyond the limits of the excavation trench. It was 0.5m deep, had one vertical side and a flate base. The fill was a soft, brown clay silt with stone and coal fragment inclusions; it also contained pottery fragments dating to the late medieval period and a single piece of animal bone.
