Monument record 2415/2 - Ice house south west of Wincham Hall

Summary

An icehouse is marked on the OS 2nd edition maps to the south west of Wincham Hall. A site visit in 2017 recorded a circular brick built icehouse at this location. For a long time, there were few ways of preserving food other than salting and pickling. From the 17th century, the idea of an Ice house was introduced to large estates. They were structures built to house blocks of ice to prevent them from melting. They were well insulated and partly underground. The ice was obtained from ponds and lakes frozen in the winter months. Sometimes fields were deliberately flooded by farmers to provide extra income.

Record of a site visit to locate two different ice houses marked on the 1st and second edition OS maps. Unable to find an ice house (or the watercourse described) at the location indicated on the CHER map and on the First Edition Ordnance Survey Map (SJ 6859 7532). It was not marked on the Second Edition.

Searching for the ice house marked on the Second Edition (SJ 684 751) and discovered the one pictured exactly where indicated on the map. It matches the description given for the first ice house. It is brick built and dry internally. It is close to a watercourse. It has a side entrance but no tunnel. It is overgrown and Japanese knotweed has reached within a metre or two.
