Monument record 14032 - Coal Mining at North End

Please read our .

Summary

Area of pits and spoil heaps connected by trackways are visible as earthworks at North End. The pits appear to be bell pits which are typically associated with early post medieval coal mining. The shaft was dug to the level of the coal, which was them extracted by cutting out from the base of the shaft and hand winched to the surface. Typically no supports (props) were used, which limited the depth and the extent of the workings. Therefore it is quite typical to encounter sequences of bell pits which follow the line of the coal seam. This method of mining coal was in use from the medieval period till at least the eighteenth century.

A post medieval coal mining site is visible on historic aerial photography and lidar imagery as a group of earthwork shafts and associated spoil heaps, linked in places by embanked or ditched trackways.

One of the mounds has previously been identified as a supposed barrow (see CHER 1590) but is probably a spoil heap. The three southernmost shafts and mounds are linked by a single trackway, embanked to the east and visible as a ditch flanked by banks in its western extents. The majority of features remain extant on the latest 2010 aerial photography though some are obscured by tree cover (see 2-4).
