Summary

An earlry colliery survives as earthworks in this area. The site comprises spoil heaps which surrounded the individual pits excavated to extract coal from relatively shallow depth.

Full Description

<1> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ9481, 1873-1883 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

This map depcits a four possible spoil heaps. The easternmost spoil heap is labelled 'Old Shaft (Coal)'. Two further spoil heaps lie to the north west and all are connected by a trackway. This trackway leads to the wharf at Adlington Basin where there is a further spoil heap. A further 'Old Shaft is depicted to the south of Wood Lane.

The spoil heap adjacent to the canal wharf is no longer extant. The others noted in (1) are extant as earthworks.

Post medieval coal working is visible as earthworks centred at approximately SJ 9412 8163 on historic vertical photography. The features consist of shafts and accompanying mounds and also larger spoil heaps and extractive pits. Though some of the features have been destroyed by the building of a marina, the remainder appear extant on the latest 2010 aerial imagery, or are obscured by tree cover (see 4 and 5).
