Summary

Styperson Pool is situated at the southern end of Styperson Park (see CHER 7993/1). It is a large pool crossed by a dam or causeway . It's function is uncertain and it may indicate the deer park's remodelling into a landscape park in the eighteenth century. However, it may have it's origins as a medieval fish pond.

Full Description

Pool or pools c.300 metres long and c.110 metres wide at the widest point. The pool is created by a short dam (25m x 10m), across a narrow valley, at the pool's western end. Approximately 50 metres from the western end of the pond is a broad (c.10m) causeway or dam crossing the pond on a north-north-east to south-south-west alignment.

This map depicts the pool located on the southern side of Styperson Park (see CHER 7993/1).

A building is depicted in the middle of the park (see CHER 7993/1) on the hill accessed by a road or track which runs south over the pool's dam or causeway.

This map depicts two sluices on the southern part of the causeway or dam and a further sluice on the dam. The building located on the northern side of the pool is labelled 'Boat House (Ruins)'.

The pond may date from the late eighteenth century or early nineteenth century, but may also, given the park's possible medieval origins, be based on an earlier medieval fish pond.
