Summary

The site of a farmstead known from documentary sources dating from the fourteenth century. Nineteenth century maps depcit a farmhouse and a farmyard surrounded by farm buildings which include a possible barn and a possible pig sty. A well was located in a nearby field. The farm had been demolished by 1898.

The 1839 tithe map for Baddiley township depicts five buildings at this location. The buildings appear to be arranged round a yard. The award records this plot as 'house, buildings, garden etc.'. Adjacent plots include 'well field' and 'nearer barn field'.

This map published in 1875 depicts an L shaped farmhouse with two small buildings to the immediate south-west, one of which may be a pig sty. To the immediate south-east of the farmhouse is a garden. To the immediate north-west of the house is a yard with four buildings arranged around its perimeter. A well is depicted c.130m north-east of the farmhouse in the field known as 'well field' (see 1). An unenclosed lane connects the farmstead to other farms and settlements to the north and south.

The first documentary reference to Blackhurst (Blachurst) dates from 1314. There are two further references dating from the fourteenth century and further references dating to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
