Full Description
<1> Earthworks Archaeological Services, 2017, Proposed Residential Redevelopment on Land off Volunteer Street, Chester: An Archaeological Evaluation, R4047 (Client Report). SCH8287.
Trial trenching undertaken in 2017 on land located off Volunteer Street identified deep soil deposits extending between 2.5m to 2.7m below the current ground level. Artefactual evidence indicated that the earliest deposit encountered dated to the late Medieval period, with the majority of the stratigraphic sequence dating to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These deposits indicate that this area remained largely open space throughout the later medieval and post-medieval periods and was seen as a convenient place to dispose refuse. Significantly, they provide a protective cushion over any earlier archaeology that may survive within the site.
