Summary

The site of a possible Iron Age or Romano-British settlement enclosure visible as a cropmark. The site comprises one larger enclosure with two ring ditches within, and a ditch to the north potentially representing a further enclosure.

Full Description

A potential later prehistoric or Roman curvilinear enclosure with two associated ring ditches is visible as cropmark ditches centred at SJ 4210 5589 on oblique aerial photography (see 2). The site comprises one larger enclosure with the two ring ditches incorporated into the perimeter, and a ditch to the north potentially representing a further boundary or enclosure. The large enclosure measures 36.5m north-west to south-east, with the south-western perimeter not visible. The larger ring ditch on the northern edge of the enclosure is approximately 12.2m in diameter and the smaller, to the west, around 7.3m.

Records cropmark in this area: described as two possible straight ditches, showing up as light cropmarks and joining at c.45 degree angle.

The ditches described by NJH in (2) are pale parch marks. The features described in (1) are dark and seemingly separate.
