Monument record 7951 - Site of Farm Buldings at Marshgate Farm

Summary

The 1844 tithe map depicts approximately seven buildings in this area. The three larger buildings define a possible yard on three sides. The accompanying award records both these plots as being held by the same tenant. The adjacent plot 146 is held by a different tenant and does not seem to be part of the farmstead. The shape of the buildings suggests a farmhouse and other farm buildings such as a barn and a dairy etc. Most of the buildings had been demolished by the start of the twentieth century, possibly due to a merger with the neighbouring farmstead.

The tithe map depicts approximately seven buildings in plots 145 and 147 (see 1). The three larger buildings define a possible yard on three sides. The accompanying award records both these plots as being held by the same tenant. The adjacent plot 146 is held by a different tenant and does not seem to be part of the farmstead.

<2> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ5378, 1874-1875 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

Similar to (1). The shape of the buildings suggests that of the three buildings adjacent to the possible yard, the building to the north-west is the farmhouse. Other buildings are probably a barn, dairy etc.

<3> Ordnance Survey, 1896-1898, Ordnance Survey First Revision County Series (Epoch 2) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ5378, 1898-1899 (Maps and Plans). SCH3848.

This map suggests that this farmstead may have merged with the adjacent one in plot 146 (see 1). The outbuildings have been demolished and new buildings built to the south and west, adjacent to the other farmstead.

<4> Huntings Surveys Ltd, 1971-1973, 1971-1973 County Survey (Aerial Photograph). SCH4881.

The possible farmhouse, the last surviving building of those depicted on the 1844 tithe map (see 1), has been demolished.
