Full Description

North wall (ruined) of former church 1809-13 by William Porden. Coursed red sandstone wall, approximately 60 feet long x 18 feet high with lower parts of two north windows, with cusping and fragment of a mullion. A small part of the east wall and base of east window survive, attached to the north wall.

Rebuilt by Earl Grosvenor and designed by Mr Porden. The church is built of red stone from an adjoin quarry and comprises ‘…a light tower with pinnacles, battlements, and buttresses, of three stories; a nave without side aisles, on each side of which are three acutely pointed windows; two transepts and a small chancel, the exterior of which forms three sides of an octagon.’. In 1853 the church was refitted and a chancel added. Further alterations were made in 1869. The south transept contained the vestry and the north contained the mausoleum for the Grosvenor family containing monuments relocated from the medieval church (see CHER 1965/1/1).
