Detailed decription of the Poynton brickworks near the present railway station. A 1875 report descibes the machinery, steam engine, kilns and brick drying shed built on site at a cost of £3000. Brick produced mainly for the colliery and local buildings. Brickworks closed by 1920 . Kilns and railway sidings remained in 1920 but the buildings which housed the machinery had gone. Site descibed in 1983 as a mixture of scrub, waterfilled pits and some foundations.

Brickfield ( a source of clay) to the south of the railway was linked to the brickworks by a tunnel and tramway. Brickfield levelled and made into a park by 1983 .

<6> ArcHeritage, 2017, Hazelbadge Road, Poynton, Cheshire: Desk-Based Assessment, R4378 (Client Report). SCH8797.

A desk-based assessment and walkover field survey were undertaken in 2017 for land off Hazelbadge Road, Poynton, Cheshire (NGR SJ 91238 83891), in support of proposals for a residential development. Poynton Brick Works was constructed in the western part of the Site in the 1870s, but was disused by 1920 and had been demolished by 1938. The respective railway sidings were also dismantled.

The walkover field survey identified that the site of Poynton Brick Works is now occupied by woods. The remains of several brick
works’ features survive within the wood, including the brick, concrete and stone remains of possible machine bases. The bricks are handmade and unfrogged. Further features may be obscured by the ground cover, which is dense woodland, scrub and
overgrowth. The remains of the earliest and largest of the brick works’ clay pits is also partially overgrown with trees and vegetation, but contains standing water. Steeply sloping sides indicate the extent of the excavation on the clay pit’s north and west sides. A later 19th-century clay pit immediately to the east of the railway line also contains standing water, while the site of a smaller, square pit or pond is marked by a shallow depression, surrounded by vegetation and trees. Due to the nature of the ground cover, no features were observed in relation to the majority of the former brick works’ buildings, although scattered bricks and several old, cast-iron downpipes were visible within the wood. A low bank appears to be all that survives of the former railway siding at the west of the brick works. This feature appears to be the remains of the embankment on which the track was constructed. The rails and sleepers have been dismantled and the majority of the former siding is now heavily wooded.
